NFL Global Junior Championship 2001: USA 21, Canada 19

Yesterday, I posted a recap of Canada's win against Japan in the 2001 NFL Global Junior Championship.  The victory put them in a position to play the United States for the gold medal.

Unfortunately, that game didn't go quite as well.

The recap below, like the previous one, was originally posted on NFLEurope.com and was abbreviated slightly.
...USA took a first quarter lead when running back Adam Gorman powered over from a yard out and Brian Jack’s extra point earned a 7-0 advantage.

Canadian defensive back Yves Hercules recovered a fumble at his team’s 49-yard line to trigger a scoring drive that would tie the game in the second quarter. Tight end Chris Best hooked up with quarterback John Williams for a 16-yard gain, then Canada moved dramatically downfield as a 15-yard penalty was tagged onto the end of a 12-yard Williams run.

From second and goal Alexis Bwenge took the ball to the one-yard line for Williams to find the endzone on the keeper, then the boot of (Stephan) Larosiliere levelled the scores.

After Canada retained possession of the ball despite USA protests that their punt had touched a Canadian player and been recovered, the hosts marched downfield to again take the lead...(when) running back Eric Hunter crossed the plain from seven yards out.

Defensive back Marvin Elliott came up with an interception to give USA another shot at the endzone before halftime, and Aki Houllis fired a 64-yard bomb to Williams as time ran out in the first half. The grab that would have earned Williams 116 first half yards was wiped out when USA chose to accept a roughing the passer penalty and take a final shot at the endzone that this time landed in the hands on Canadian defensive back Hercules.

Two spectacular third quarter plays saw Larosiliere fire a 37-yard bullet to Danny Desriveaux then hook up with Daniel Zephir over 31 yards to set up a quarterback sneak from two yards out. Having made his way into the endzone Larosiliere was unable to pull Canada level as his extra point attempt flew wide left and left Canada trailing 14-13.

Just when USA looked to have stalled on their drive in reply, special teams played a big role as Canada fumbled possession back to the hosts, who took over 11 yards from the endzone. Gorman edged closer on two carries then a carry from running back Adam Hall and a twice-taken Jack extra point increased the lead to 21-13 late in the third quarter.

Canada made gradual yardage through the running of Greg Lund and a third down pass to Hercules for a crucial first down, but were hindered by a sack from Dustin Keseleski and an intentional grounding call before a fumbled turned the ball over to USA lineman Chris Fairchild.

Canada faced a crucial third and one at its own 33-yard mark and Nick Wishart kept the drive alive before Larosiliere fired a 62-yard bomb that Desriveaux took to the USA two-yard line. Bwegne pulled Canada to within two points of the American lead, but failed to repeat the surge into the endzone on the two-line conversion with 4:37 remaining and Canada trailed 21-19.

The Championship Game came down to Canada taking over at the USA 46-yard line with a field goal their target for victory. A fruitless run was followed by Larosiliere making eight yards on the ground, then the quarterback scrambled out of bounds but was denied the first down by a holding call.

Almost back at their starting point with 40 seconds remaining, a third down bomb down the middle was broken up by Omar Laurence before Zephir made a dramatic 11-yard reception on fourth down.

Down to 24 seconds remaining in the Red Oak Farms Global Junior Championship V, Larosiliere was sacked by Kesleski then was intercepted on a last desperate fling at the endzone.
